The Company
Dermigen, Inc., a biotechnical enterprise focusing on consulting and research management related to tissue-based toxicology and therapeutics, was founded as a Texas corporation in 1990 by Earl F. Walborg, Jr., Ph.D., Thomas J. Slaga, Ph.D., and the Ventex Group, a venture capital group associated with the Texas Research Park Foundation. Before founding Dermigen, Dr. Walborg was a member of the research faculty of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (UTMDACC) and served as the Associate Director of the Science Park-Research Division, a component of UTMDACC located near Smithville, Texas. Dr. Slaga, a recognized authority on multistage carcinogenesis, served as Director of the Science Park-Research Division of UTMDACC from 1983 to 1997, President and CEO of AMC Cancer Center in Denver, Colorado from 1977-2004, and presently is Interim Director of the San Antonio Cancer Institute and Professor of Pharmacology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dermigen is headquartered in Smithville, Texas in close proximity to the SPRD. Dr. Walborg serves as President and CEO. Dr. Slaga serves as Chairman of Dermigen’s Scientific Advisory Board.
Capabilities
Dermigen has formal consulting agreements with a number of academic scientists with expertise in dermal and hepatic toxicology, oxidative stress/damage, as well as the carcinogenic potential of chemicals (e.g., pesticides, petroleum middle distillates and organic peroxides), electromagnetic fields and ultraviolet radiation. The acknowledged expertise of Dermigen’s Scientific Advisory Board, assures that Dermigen can access biomedical science on its advancing edge. Because of its access to biomedical expertise, Dermigen’s services have been called upon by industry and industry consortia to address toxicological problems that require innovative research approaches. Once a particular toxicological problem is identified, Dermigen’s preferred mode of operation is to assemble a Scientific Advisory Panel, drawing from consultants with whom Dermigen has existing agreements and securing the services of other scientists who bring new and needed expertise. Dermigen works with its consultants to develop experimental protocols, select appropriate commercial/academic laboratories for research performance, facilitate transfer of required technology, and evaluate research results. Dermigen possesses the management capabilities required to coordinate the activities of its consultants, Study Directors at commercial or academic laboratories, and sponsor representative/s. Dermigen’s contacts with academic researchers has facilitated biotechnology-related collaborations funded through Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Grant programs (see listing of SBIR/STTR grant support). Dermigen also provides litigation support, including background/ position papers and expert testimony, in cases involving health effects related to alleged exposure to environmental agents. Dermigen’s activities have resulted in a number of publications that attest to its breadth of expertise (see Dermigen Bibliography). |
